How might changes to disability benefits affect you? Tell us what you think.

27.10.2025

When the UK Government initially proposed changes to disability benefits, it left a lot of people scared for the future. There have since been changes to the original proposal, and currently (correct as at October 2025) the only measures being taken forward relate to Universal Credit, which include scrapping the work capacity assessment and replacing with a new system.

I know there is widespread concern about the impact this could have here, and some people are still concerned what changes might be made to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) after the current review (known as the Timms Review).

Wales has a higher proportion of people receiving disability benefits than many other parts of the UK, and the region I cover has one of the largest disability pay gaps in Wales.

This could be an indication that there are barriers that don’t exist in other parts of the country. As Chair of the cross-party group in the Senedd on Learning Disability and Plaid Cymru’s Spokesperson on Equalities, I’ve had some of these concerns raised directly with me, but there are many other people who will be impacted by any changes whose voices I want to hear.

Therefore I want to find out the views of the people I represent. I welcome responses from anyone in the local authority areas of Swansea, Neath Port Talbot or Bridgend who may be impacted by these changes. It might be you, or someone that you are close to and/or care for who is in receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Universal Credit (UC) or another type of disability benefit.
